Marketing Communications Fitness Check List
Do you have a mission statement? If yes, when was it last
reviewed and how widely is it known and used? Does your mission
statement accurately reflect your organization as it is today? Is
your vision for the future captured in the mission statement?
Do you have a graphic identity system (this may include
a logomark, special typography, a slogan or tagline, and particular
colors)? How effective is your graphic presence, how consistently
is the system implemented and do your audiences have any difficulty
recognizing you?
Who handles your communications program? Is the function
centralized or scattered among various individuals or departments
to implement? What are the major components of the person(s) job
descriptions who are responsible for your publications and p.r.?
Is responsibility for a web site and media relations included?
Is there a climate of understanding and acceptance of the
importance of marketing to the future of your institutionis
this the same for all constituencies?
Do you have a standing trustee committee on public relations
or marketing?
What are your greatest strengths as an institution? Are
any of these strengths unrecognized (i.e. Are you hiding your light
under a bushel?)?
What are your greatest weaknesses? Does the public say
negative things about you that arent true? Are you under-recognized
by the public?
Which audiences do you communicate with the most, and which
audiences who are important to you may deserve more of your attention?
What are your three highest communications priorities for
the coming months and how do these link to your friend- and/or fundraising
goals?
What is the biggest obstacle standing in the way of your
doing a better job communicating and how might you overcome it?
