Cheney & Company’s
silver anniversary
Twenty-five years, a quarter of a century in business... such a notable
event inevitably spawns lists and measurements and recollections—the
temptation to recount the long and short of it. I could regale you with
a liturgy of the successes and failures, the joys and challenges of working
in an era so profoundly changed by technology that it’s hard even
to remember the way we worked in 1983. But I’ll spare you these
stories and just say that we’ve covered quite a distance since
I began this enterprise with an IBM Selectric and a telephone on a sawhorse
desk in my sunroom.
The biggest difference between then and 2008 it is that there is too
little time, too much information and too many choices. And not enough
sleep. We whack down prose for speed. Clicking has supplanted turning
pages. Texting is the new talking.
Whatever your mode, going beyond the obvious will make you stand out.
So my gift to you this birthday year is a cool collection of quarters
and 25s to add to your repertoire.
Peace be with you.
