FUN WITH PALINDROMES

Our 2002 calendar piqued the interest of word lovers everywhere. We received many email responses to the calendar, including this poem (which also references Carol’s cats, Noah and Clovis). We’re still compiling this list, so if you have a favorite palindrome we’d love to hear it.

Was it a bat I saw?
Or
Was it a car or a cat I saw?
Or perhaps a
Tangy gnat?
Did you know that
Tarzan raised Desi Arnaz’ rat?
Hope Noah and Clovis got a
Pint a’ Catnip
For Christmas.
Did you see the Aurora Borealis the other night?
I roamed under it as a tired, nude Maori.
Am feeling a little
Drab as a fool, aloof as a bard
But hope you are well.

Other responses:

The caption for March-April could have been: “Was it a cat I saw?

Funny thing is, I don’t remember this much buzz about 1991. Ah-ha!

We love your calendar of 2002. Palindromes are important in molecular biology. The sequence recognized by DNA binding protein is always a palindromic sequence.
